Benedict “Sonny” Kawaykla


Apache, Oklahoma

Was born November 7, 1935 in Apache, OK to James “Lane” and Pearl (Jozhe) Kawaykla, Jr. He passed away at his home in Apache on June 24th at the age of 76.

Benny graduated from Broxton High School. He entered the U.S. Coast Guard and served for eight years. After he was honorably discharged, he went to OSU Technical College where he received an Associate’s Degree in Diesel Mechanics. He was employed by International Harvester as a diesel mechanic and worked for the company through several ownerships until he retired from what is now Roberts Trucking. Benny also farmed and raised cattle and quarter horses. He was a member of the Apache Reformed Church where he was the last original Charter Member and served as an Elder.

Benny married Carol May Harness in Oklahoma City on May 4, 1985. They made their home north of Apache. He was a member of the Apache Masonic Lodge and held his 32°. He belonged to the American Quarter Horse Association, and several farming organizations. Benny owned several quarter horses, racehorses and enjoyed traveling to Ruidoso, NM for the horse races. He enjoyed golfing and traveling, especially out west to the Mescalero Reservation in New Mexico. He earned his private pilot’s license and owned his own plane. Benny also loved watching Western movies and listening to country music.

Benny was the last full-blooded Tribal member of the Ft. Sill-Apache Tribe. He served as Vice-Chairman of the Tribe, Chairman of the Gaming Commission and was a board member of the Housing Authority. He was the great-grandson of Chief Naiche, great-grandson of Chief Mahko, great-great grandson of Chief Cochise, great-great-great grandson of Chief Loco, a descendant of Chief Mangus Colorado, and his uncle, Chief/Chairman Benedict Jozhe, Jr.

A prayer service will be held Tuesday, June 26th at 7:00 P.M. at the Apache Reformed Church

A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, June 27th at 1:00 P.M. at the Apache Reformed Church with Pastor Wayne Townsend, officiating and Penny Cleghorn Soontay, assisting. Burial will follow at the Ft. Sill-Apache Cemetery, Ft. Sill, OK under the direction of Crews Funeral Home.
